Playing Latin and other world music. |
Name: Rich Cooke
Show: Roots and Shoots
When are you on?
I am usually on on Mondays from 6pm to 8pm. There are three of us who do the show. There is always one of us in the studio, sometimes two and on special occasions all three of us are there.
What type of music can we expect to hear on your show?
On the show we play world music, my thing is largely Latin, the two Martins play a wide range of world/folk music.
How did you get into this type of music?
I’ve been listening to world music since I was a kid growing up in Jamaica. I heard Sergio Mendes and Santana in the 60s and 70s in London and got hooked on Latin music. Fifteen years of Womad, getting into playing congas and dancing introduced me to a lot of new Latin/world music.
How long have you been DJing?
I’ve been a Salsa DJ for about four years and joined Phonic FM at its inception.
How did you start DJing?
I was invited by the two Martins to join the Roots and Shoots team.
Can we find you DJing anywhere other than on Phonic FM?
I host a Salsa dance night, Salsa Rico, in Exeter once a month, playing salsa, salsaton, merengue, bachata and chachacha. Details on Facebook.
What was has been your most embarrassing DJing moment?
I was DJing at the Salsa night and accidentally pressed the wrong button and the room went silent. The whole crowd looked at me with daggers!!
What has been your best DJing moment?
Probably some of the positive email feedback we get on Phoinc FM.
Who is your favourite artist?
I’d have to say El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico .
What is your all time favourite album?
30 Aniversario by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico …so many great songs
Where do you shop for music?
I usually shop online for my music.
