Nick Roberts-Alatti

Two hours of music celebrating roots, alt country and alt rock from North America.

Two hours of music celebrating roots, alt country and alt rock from North America.

Name: Nick Roberts-Alatti (sorry it’s not a bit catchier or more esoteric like DJ Harvest Moon)

Show: Americana

When are you on?

Fridays, fortnightly from 2-4pm

What type of music can we expect to hear on your show?

Richmond Fontaine, Ryan Adams, Cat Power, Calexico, Fleet Foxes, Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Gillian Welch, Neil Young . Anyone who’s cool, North American, has an intriguing story to tell through the power of song and likes the sound of pedal steel guitars.

How did you get into this type of music?

Reading Uncut magazine and liking the collision that happened between Country music and Punk.

How long have you been DJing?
About two years now.

How did you start DJing?
I was writing an article about Phonic and decided to be cheeky and ask to do a show. It had always been a lifetime’s ambition to broadcast a reggae show and Phonic gave me that opportunity. I then needed a fresh challenge…

Can we find you DJing anywhere other than on Phonic FM?
I did the Exeter Respect Festival.

What has been your most embarrassing DJing moment?

Forgetting the security number to open the studio door (does that count?)

What has been your best DJing moment?
Discovering so much brilliant music that exists beyond the narrow confines of the UK charts. It’s as much a musical education for me as it is for the listeners.

Who is your favourite artist?

It changes every month but at the moment for Willy Vlautin’ s rasping vocals and Raymond Carver -inspired lyrics, it must be Richmond Fontain e.

What is your all time favourite album?
Well, my favourite album of 2009 has been Calexico’s Carried to Dust .

Where do you shop for music?

I normally shop for music on Amazon.

    Hi,

Just wanted to know what’s happened to the Friday afternoon reggae program, as it hasn’t been on for the last 3 weeks :-(. One of the best reggae programs anywhere in radio-land - when is it coming back?

    Regards,
    Alan
