Playing music from around the world brought to us by people from all corners of the world. |
Name: Gervaise Cerio
Show: DRIVE Live
When are you on?
The last Thursday of each month from 2pm to 4pm.
What type of music can we expect to hear on your show?
World, electronica and dance. I also bring in volunteers from the black, minority and ethnic (BME) community, they share their music and stories about their experience of coming to the UK, how integrated they feel and what they have been up to in terms of volunteering in the local community. They also have some great stories about their lives in their countries of origin.
How did you get into this type of music?
I’ve always been into travelling to unusual places and stumbling across music on the way. And a friend ran an African/Latin disco in Brighton and had hordes of music.
How long have you been DJing?
On the radio, I’ve only done a few shows in the last three years on Vibraphonic FM. Before that, I used to run an African and world music disco, called Ambiance, in and around Devon.
How did you start DJing?
In my role as Diversity Officer at the Exeter Council Voluntary Service (CVS) one of my jobs is to create interesting and innovative volunteering opportunities – I thought DJing/sharing music and stories on radio was a cool idea for people from black and ethnic minority (BME) backgrounds.
Can we find you DJing anywhere other than on Phonic FM?
No, I don’t DJ anywhere else.
What has been your most embarrassing DJing moment?
It hasn’t happened yet!
What has been your best DJing moment?
Probably co-ordinating the news broadcast at the end of a long discussion on ‘jazz and Jews’ where the last thing the volunteer said was: “Keep swinging”. (He had been talking a lot and we were wondering how we were going to cut him short for the 4o’clock news).
Who is your favourite artist?
Franco & TPOK Jazz because he plays the guitar so well and has an amazing voice.
What is your all time favourite album?
Tartitt – Ichichilla – it’s strange and nomadic and a bit ferocious sounding!
Where do you shop for music?
I get most of my music from festivals and the internet.
