Alternative, thought-provoking music that’s good for the soul. |
Name: Marie Belsten
Show: The Underground
When are you on? Every other Monday, 10pm-midnight.
What type of music can we expect to hear on your show?
A melting pot of alternative concoctions from new-wave innovators, classic punk rebels, art college intellectuals, post-punk popsters, angst-fuelled indie kids, and avant-garde wordsmiths.
How did you get into this type of music?
As a teenager living in London, I produced a successful fanzine called Jump Away. I would go to gigs every night of the week looking for alternative music that would excite and stimulate my senses and my musical taste is still heavily influenced by those heady days of the mid 80s. I also had a good friend who owned the best independent record shop in London, not counting Rough Trade of course, Ugly Child. That shop in Walthamstow introduced me to dozens of amazing artists I would never have otherwise discovered.
How long have you been DJing?
Just four short months.
How did you start DJing?
It was a happy accident.
Can we find you DJing anywhere other than on Phonic FM?
Only at drunken private parties in an informal capacity.
What has been your most embarrassing DJing moment?
I suspect it hasn’t happened yet.
What has been your best DJing moment?
I suspect it hasn’t happened yet.
Who is your favourite artist? Why?
Morrissey because he understands us all.
What is your all time favourite album? Why?
This is a tricky one. If I really had to choose, it would probably either be Kerosene Hat by Cracker or The Queen is Dead by The Smiths or maybe Blood & Chocolate by Elvis Costello or perhaps Well Respected Kinks by The Kinks oh, I simply can’t choose just one.
Where do you shop for music in Exeter? Why?
Martian Records cos it’s my cup of tea and it reminds me a little of the sadly deceased Ugly Child record shop (see above).
