Vincent Dance Theatre presents If We Go On, Exeter Phoenix, Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st October, 8pm
If We Go On is a series of individual acts that lay bare the mechanics of theatre, placing the investigation of language and sound at the centre of the work.
Through miniature dances and stuttering songs, militant manifestos and extended exits, If We Go On embraces uncertainty, hesitancy and not knowing with a dark, intelligent humour.
Directed and Designed by Charlotte Vincent, with text by Wendy Houstoun and composed by Alex Catona this extraordinary ensemble of multitasking performers morph words into movement, shunt gesture into sound and sometimes burst into song to conjure up the performance of their lives.
If We Go On is a relentless succession of splintered transactions, where words lose their meaning, music falls apart and dance leads itself up a blind and exhausting alley. Anarchic, nostalgic, and full of nihilistic humour, If We Go On asks: ‘If you had one last dance in you, what shape would it take?’
Part of the Uk tour 2009 this season features one of the most experienced and exceptional casts to date. Alongside Vincent Dance Theatre’s core company members - Aurora Lubos, Janusz Orlik and Patrycja Kujawska (recently seen in Kneehigh’s Don John) - are Valentina Formenti (Cholmondeleys & Featherstonehaughs, New Adventures), Alex Catona (composer/musician), Henry Montes (Siobhan Davies Dance, Jonathan Burrows Company), Scott Smith (Steve Paxman, Lisa Nelson) and Carly Best (Jonathan Lunn).
Since 1994, Vincent Dance Theatre has built a national and international reputation for creating and touring powerful, engaging dance theatre work and delivering high quality participation work across the UK and abroad.
Pulling together movement, text, choreography, theatre, live music and a strong visual sense of place, VDT’s rollercoaster productions challenge conventional values in dance and gender politics.
The company’s live work tours to theatre venues across the UK and abroad. Installation and film work is distributed into non-theatre spaces, cross arts venues and festivals across Europe, Canada, Australia and United States.
If We Go On is funded by Grants for the Arts through the Arts Council of England. Co-commissioned by Sheffield Theatres, Newbury Corn Exchange, Hull City Council and Peak Performances@Montclair State University. Supported by The Junction Cambridge and Danceworks UK.
