Phonic FM’s 1st birthday: A sell-out crowd and an electric atmosphere

Phonic FM birthday bash and benefit gig, Exeter Phoenix, Friday 6th March

By Jenna Richards

A sell-out crowd and an electric atmosphere marked Phonic FM’s first birthday celebration and benefit gig at Exeter Phoenix last Friday.

Phonic FM DJ’s warmed up the atmosphere and kept the growing crowds entertained throughout the night as the 100 or so tickets not sold in advance were snapped up on the door.

Exeter’s very own ten-piece funk-fuelled ska machine Melosa kicked up a storm on the main stage opening the live action in the auditorium.

Their selection of hot, high energy, feel good sunshine ska with a Latin twist soon had the crowds dancing around. It was clear to see why they are festival favourites.

Melosa’s intriguing collective of musical flavours and varied array of instruments was free flowing and immensely enjoyable. They left the crowd eager for more as they vacated the stage and Phonic FM’s Andy and Rich took control of the decks whilst the crowds awaited the arrival of headline act The Haggis Horns.

A special touch throughout the evening were the funky lighting and visual displays, leaving party goers wondering if they really did see a Phonic FM logo bounce across the dance floor.

Eight-piece live funk extravaganza the Haggis Horns took the crowd and whipped them into a dancing frenzy as soon as they stepped onto the stage.

These boys combine heavy breakbeat funk, soul, hip-hop and afrobeat with the skill of trained jazz musicians.

They ignited the dance floor as revellers moved and grooved to the funky beats. The numerous instruments produced a variety of sounds and added fuel to the fire as even those who don’t normally dance felt compelled to move to the high octaine yet smooth beats.

Their vibrant brand of big band jazz mixed up with numerous musical flavours topped what was already a great night.

Much like Phonic FM’s programming an eccletic mix of people came together to join Exeter’s only playlist free radio station and sound alternative in celebrating one year of broadcasting, and the atmosphere was monstrously high-spirited.

As the news came in that the gig has sold out Phonic FM presenters, volunteers and directors wandered around with even bigger grins on their faces. This really was a night to remember.

Everyone at Phonic FM would like to thank all those who turned out for the night and we hope to see you all again next year for an even bigger and better second birthday party.
