Hi Phonic Massive,
We had an excellent joint meeting between our Board of Directors and Steering Group last Wednesday, which has resulted in the following updates and reminder for you all…
NEW BOARD MEMBERS
I’m pleased to announce that Gervaise Cerio and Dan Kjellgren have now joined the Phonic FM Board as Directors of the non-profit company legally responsible for running our station: Exeter Community Radio Ltd.
Both bring a wealth of experience honed in the voluntary sector, in Gervaise’s case by running the DRIVE Project working with people from black & minority ethnic backbrounds (BME) and in Dan’s case by working with young people in The Ivy Project.
They have both played a great role on our Steering Group and their skills complement those of the other station Directors: Dave, Patrick, Aaron and Paul.
STEERING GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS REPORT – can be found here
As a result of feedback received from many of you at our well-attended Public Meeting and Presenters Meeting, our Steering Group have been hard at work collating views and using them to inform a comprehensive report on the future working structure of Phonic FM, which complements a ‘governance’ structure drafted by Partick.
This was discussed at our joint Steering Group and Board meeting and largely agreed, subject to a few minor changes made at the meeting itself and some further consideration at our next Board meeting
The Steering Group report can be found here so you can see how how the station’s management arrangements are shaping up – and please think about the taking up one of the volunteer roles we need to have in place to run the station most effectively.
If you have any comments on the report, please send them to Steering Group Chair Pete Bishop pete@phonic.fm.
PRESENTER TRAINING REMINDER
Dave Treharne has arranged a Myriad training session for the mornng of Saturday 25 April in our training studio, please try to get along if you don’t know how to use Myriad – it really does help with shows! Dave is also offering training in the use of ‘Adobe Audition’ software which can be used to produce pre-recorded shows, jingles and idents, and he can also arrange to meet you for a bespoke Myriad session if you can’t make the session on 25 April.
Dave’s email is david@phonic.fm please get in touch with him direct if you wish to arrange some individual training…
AARON STILL NEEDS YOU TELEPHONE NUMBERS!
Many of you have still to provide Aaron, our Director responsible for programming, with your mobile and home telephone numbers. It is really important that you do so, because Aaron may need to get in touch with you individually about programming issues. Aaron’s email is copied in so please send him those numbers as soon as possible…
HELPING NEW PRESENTERS BY HAVING THEM ON YOUR SHOW
If you are an experienced presenter then please note that you may be asked if you can have a new presenter sitting in on your show. I’ve done this a few times and it’s great fun for both parties – both in terms of building confidence for the new presenter and the veteran, and you’ll be surprised at how much you know and can pass on!
WANT TO GET COPIES OF YOUR SHOWS?
If you want a copy of any of you shows then we can provide them if you supply us with a clearly labelled memory stick and the date and time of the show you want.
Patrick is providing this service and memory sticks can be left for him at the Phoenix box office.
SHOW LOGOS NEEDED FOR OUR PRINTED PROGRAMME
Work is progressing nicely on a printed programme showing the current Phonic FM schedule for the period from 1 April to 30 September.
As many of our shows are hosted by organisations which make up the city’s ‘alternative’ culture, it would be great to have your logos added to the relevant space for your show, so please send them straight to Nigel Pennington, who’s copied in…
WANTED! SOCIAL EVENT CO-ORDINATOR
As well as serving the community of Exeter, Phonic FM is itself a community of volunteers and feedback from events such as the facilitated Presenters Meeting has been that they have been great social occasions, so does anyone want to volunteeer to be our social event co-ordinator? If so, let me know…
PATRICK’S COLLECTING MEMBERSHIP FEES
Remember, Patrick is visiting as many shows as possible to collect membership fees and give out t-shirts, he will also ask for home and mobile telephone numbers if you haven’t sent your ones to Aaron (see above).
INCREASING OUR SPOKEN WORD OUTPUT
As part of our Offcom licence commitment, we want to increase the amount of spoken word output on Phonic FM. Aaron will be approaching some shows to see if they can integrate spoken word items into their slots and, if you feel the urge to add a spoken word section to your show, there are pre-recorded spoken word items you can use on Myriad.
PHONIC FM BANNER NOW IN PATRICK’S OFFICE
The missing Phonic FM banner was found by the Phoenix staff and is now in the box of Vibraphonic Festival merchandise in Patrick’s office on the first floor of the Phoenix, and our other banner should still be hanging up in the Phoenix auditorium – remember they are there for you to use at any events where you want to promote the station.
PHONIC FM DOES WELL IN EXETER RADIO SURVEY
Dave Treharne has it on good authority that Phonic FM has come out very well from the official ‘RAJAR’ survey of what people listen to in Exeter. My understanding is that around 10% of the city’s radio listeners are tuning in to our station, apologies if I’ve got that wrong Dave!
AND FINALLY, HALF MARATHON PHONIC FUNDRAISER
I will be running the ‘Great West Run’ Exeter Half Marathon on at 9.30am on Sunday 3 May to raise money for Phonic FM. I was hoping to have set up an online donations facility but that’s not an option at present so I am instead collecting using a traditional sponsorship form.
As well as raising cash for the station, this is a great chance to publicise Phonic FM to a captive audience as literally thousands of people will be out on the city centre streets watching the race. All we need is a banner, a ghetto-blaster playing Phonic (Sketch’s Sunday Scribble will be on for most of the race) and our postcards to hand out – please contact Pete Bishop (copied in) if you can help – I’ll do my bit by running 13.1 miles!
Best Wishes Everyone,
PAUL
Director, Phonic FM
