Rembetika the Greek Blues

The story of Rembetika this Saturday on the Respect Show. Rembetika is music often referred to as the Greek Blues. Originating in the prisons and coffee shops of the crumbling Ottoman Empire it found voice in the disposed Greek speaking population thrown out of Turkey after 1922. The music deals with love, prison, hashish in the emerging grey underworld of 1930’s Greece.

The music was banned but this didn’t stop the rise in its popularity amongst the working class. It has influenced Greek music ever since.
