Sculptor to leave his mark at talk

Sculptor to leave his mark at talk

A talk by sculptor David Nash, Drewe Arms, Drewsteignton, near Exeter, Thursday 21st April, 7.30pm

Renowned sculptor David Nash will be giving a talk in Drewsteignton.

David will talk about his practice as a sculptor, followed by an informal discussion at the event organised by the Dartmoor Arts Project in collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary Art and The Natural World (CCANW).

David Nash is Britain’s most important contemporary sculptor in wood, a material in which he has worked for over 40 years.

He not only carves wood, largely from fallen trees, with chain and milling saws – skills that he has perfected over the years – but he also creates sculptures from growing plants, cutting and training them into domes or ladders. His famous ash dome planted as saplings in 1977, is now a mature dome centred on a plot of woodland in North Wales.

His works convey a wealth of expression, from enormous force to exquisite delicacy, produced by his unique use of chainsaw and charring as well as natural drying. Nash has exhibited all over the world in hundred’s of solo and group exhibitions and currently has a major retrospective at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

CCANW will be presenting a number of Nash’s works as the first part of their Tree Culture programme (April to September) selected from Nash’s retrospective at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. It will include sculptures, drawings showing his working processes, documentary films and smaller studies. One larger sculpture will be shown outside the CCANW building.
