A Christmas Carol – Smoke and Mirrors, Bike Shed Theatre, Wednesday 21st December to Saturday 7th January 2012
By Josh Adamson
The element that stands out in this adaptation of A Christmas Carol was the attention to detail in creating an atmosphere. From entering the smoke filled theatre to Scrooge wallowing in self pity for a while after the visitation of the ghost of Christmas future and throughout.
Using projected images for the three ghosts, changing lighting and a simple but versatile, and well used set the different scenes were well portrayed and the actors (four of them) played the many parts very well.
Ben Crispin, who played Scrooge in particular was excellent, sucking the audience first into his darkness then his torture at reliving past decisions and present and future critisism.
With a subtle dig at David Camerons ‘Big Society’ and a great attention to detail and atmosphere, this was an excellent rendition of a classic Christmas play, and I left the theatre feeling (for the first time this year) in the Christmas spirit.
I even found myself giving money out to all the buskers in town.
Well recommended.
