Innovative and exciting: Jim Moray in concert

Jim Moray in concert, Sunday 18th March 2012, Exeter Phoenix

Jim Moray is one of the most innovative and exciting young musicians in folk music today.

He has released four ground-breaking albums: Sweet England (2003), Jim Moray (2006), Low Culture (2008) and In Modern History (2010), all receiving high critical acclaim.

Jim recorded his first album Sweet England in one day while still studying at Birmingham Conservatoire in the daytime and playing drums in pop bands at night.

His imaginatively rearranged folk songs with orchestral flourishes, guitars and electronics for many breathed a breath of fresh air into traditional music.

Awards followed – including BBC Radio Two awards for Best Newcomer and Best Artist – as well as bookings at prestigious festivals like the Cambridge Folk Festival and WOMAD.

Jim broke away from convention in 2010 with the release of his latest album In Modern History as a free give-away with the renowned world music magazine Songlines.

This was followed by the release of the two-album deluxe version of In Modern History a little while after.

Jim Moray has become highly sought after on the folk scene and beyond.

He recently joined esteemed singers and musicians Andy Cutting, his sister Jackie Oates, Caroline Henning and Steve Knightly in The Cecil Sharp Project, an extremely well received project which has created new material based on the life and collections of the founding father of the English folk revival Cecil Sharp.

When Jim Moray appears at Exeter Phoenix, we will all, I am sure, enjoy seeing and hearing a highly original and entertaining artist.

Supporting Jim Moray is up-and-coming young singer, songwriter and guitarist Maz Totterdell.
