Procession and Intention/Invention/Convention

Exeter Phoenix presents two concurrent solo exhibitions by Plymouth-based artist Ryan Curtis and Exeter-based artist, curator, and Riso-printer Nick Davies. Although primarily unconnected, both artists share an interest in chance and accident and include works that reflect a durational journey undertaken to explore their themes.

Ryan Curtis, a Fine Arts graduate, presents Procession, a new video installation that makes reference to monumental architecture and religious ceremony.
Using a combination of video and sculptural elements within the gallery space, Curtis explores how our perception of a physical object can be augmented through its passage through space and over time, depicting a pseudo-spiritual journey, dragging a monolithic structure through the streets of Exeter.

Nick Davies, who graduated in Contemporary Arts Practice, presents his exhibition, Intention/Invention/Convention. It is a platform for an interconnected series of projects that investigate the role and value of chance, mistake and accident in the process of invention and creative practice.
It includes new sculptures created entirely from Tippex correction fluid; a video work that documents the artist’s epic journey on foot, following a straight North/South line, coast to coast from Brixham to Minehead that passes straight through the gallery (in an attempt to create a new unit of measurement called the Exetreand the launch of his latest artist’s book The Principal of Limited Sloppiness.

About the Artists:

Ryan Curtis (b.1990, Tiverton, Devon) graduated in Fine Art from Plymouth College of Art in 2011 and currently lives and works in Plymouth, Devon. His practice is primarily sculptural and is rooted in the action of displacement and re-positioning. Through this he explores the durational nature of objects and structures and the physicality of materials. He makes work by utilising processes that highlight fallibility, fragility, and temporality, in both physical properties, and within the symbolic nature of the work. Within his practice Curtis also works with video, print and performative actions to investigate differing modes of engagement between ourselves and the objects that surround us.

Nick Davies (1985, St Asaph, Wales ) graduated in Contemporary Art Practice, University of Leeds in 2008 and currently lives and works in Exeter, Devon. His work often lies on the boundaries between art, design, economics, and ecology and explores cultural and social values through a variety of inter-disciplinary, collaborative, performative, and socially engaged practice.
He is founder of the artist’s limited edition print project Duplicate Editions and Curator/Publisher of Loophole Supplements, an alternative platform for artists and creatives within Wales and the South West, with an emphasis on working within a placebased practice.
