Sketches is a suite of new music composed by Phonic FM’s Pete Canter specially for the Vibraphonic Festival.

It is a blend of contemporary jazz, film-score like sound-scapes and downright groove.

The 10-piece October Ensemble is made up of Pete on sax with a jazz rhythm section plus two violins, cello, two flugelhorns and French horn. Also ambient sound recorded and mixed with studio recordings are used as links to make Sketches a continuous piece.

This really is something different! It’s jazz but not as you know it!!

An Exeter Phoenix Production with support from Exeter Arts Council, Glanville Robinson Solicitors and St David’s Veterinary Surgeons.

This famous British comedy-drama of coupling and uncoupling, instant attraction and inveterate infidelity offers more than just a voyeur's peek inside somebody else's bedroom.

Closer by Patrick Marber, Exeter Barnfield Theatre, Clifford Room, Tuesday 9th to Saturday 20th March, 8pm

This famous British comedy-drama of coupling and uncoupling, instant attraction and inveterate infidelity offers more than just a voyeur’s peek inside somebody else’s bedroom.

It exposes the raw nerve of pain that comes with the territory of love, setting off sympathetic vibrations in anyone who has been there.

Dan meets Alice, Dan falls in love with Alice and meets Anna, Anna falls in love with Larry, Dan falls in love with Anna.

Closer, an exciting, urban drama, showcasing the trials of falling in love the modern way. From blind dates, to internet sex, from chic art exhibitions to seedy night clubs — at some stage we have all been in that setting with those feelings.

Marber writes in sound-bites - his language could make David Mamet blush. Be warned: this is no Victorian drawing room drama. It is a dance of two couples — each in love with a significant other, yet drawn to the other’s other.

A spokesperson said: “The minimalist staging - using projections, photography and art – is fantastic, the cast is first class.

“Random Acts Theatre Company’s bring you a sexy, modern day comedy.”

Directed by Adam Brummitt

Produced by Fin Irwin

Cast: Tim Metcalf-Wood (Dan), Sebastian Pope (Larry), Emma Vickery ( Alice )

Vicky-Jo Eva (Anna)

Tuesday 9th to Saturday 20th March, No performances on Sundays or Mondays.

Tickets cost £8 or £5 concssions. For tickets reservations call 01392 270891.

Building on the last show about what climate models are we discuss how climate models are used in the assessment of risk to our future and how they can be relied upon as a credible resource for projections about our future.

Date of and time of broadcast:

Wednesday 10th March 10 5pm-6pm GMT

Audio from the show: Click here

This week amongst the steepening numbers of those sceptical about anthropogenic – human caused - climate change the reports from the Met Office and the community of scientists across the world is that the case today is stronger for that claim than the 2007 IPCC report , which stated it as very likely .

In the previous show of this strand: Climate Science and Environment , we explored the concept of modelling, learnt a little about the simplicities and complexities involved and how the high complexity of the climate is incorporated into them.

The increasing changes though, however we understand them, are posing significant risks to our economy, development and way of life. It is the climate models, produced from data collected and analysed, that are allowing us to explore and plan our development, business and infrastructure whilst taking into account the risks and uncertainties that a changing climate brings to the fixed and more permanent structures that we hope to construct.

How these models are used in the assessment of associated risk to our future developments and way of life and how they can be relied upon as a credible resource for projections about our future is the subject of today’s show.

With us to discuss and blow away the mist on these questions are:

Jeff Ridley , a Climate Scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre . His work is focused on climate model assessment; climate change and Ice, and global sea level rise. His work contributes to representing the science to government and projections of polar climate change and leads on the development of ice sheet models.

Philip Brohan , is also a climate scientist at the met office …collecting and analysing weather observations from the last 250 years - making long, homogenous records of surface weather, which can be used to quantify recent climate changes and to put them in context. He has contributed to new historical analyses of sea-surface, land surface, and upper-air temperatures, and surface pressure patterns. And amongst other things is interested in using observations and proxy data to validate Climate Models and constrain model-based predictions of future climate.

Also with us is Alex Webb , manager of the South West Climate Change Impacts Partnership (SWCCIP).
The only regional climate change adaptation partnership. Established in 2001, SWCCIP’s key role is to help the South West Region of England to adapt sustainably to the impacts of climate change by activity in these key areas.

Communicating and responding to the science of climate change

Advising on the social, environmental and economic impacts of climate change

Delivering and promoting sustainable adaptation responses

Engaging with stakeholders in the South West, and other regions, to deliver on climate change adaptation

———————————————————————————————

Exeter is hosting a Polish film festival from March to May under the title Kinoteka, with events across various venues in the city.

Exeter Polish Film Festival 2010

Exeter is hosting a Polish film festival from March to May under the title Kinoteka, with events across various venues in the city. There seem to be some real delights on offer here, with films spanning several genres and styles.

It opens with a free screening up at the University of the documentary The Runaway, the remarkable story of an escape from Auschwitz, as told by the last surviving participant. The director Marek Pawlowski and producer Malgorzarta Walczak will both be present to discuss the film afterwards.

On 18th March not only fans of motion pictures will be satisfied, when a joint event of Polish Film Festival and Vibraphonic Festival will see two classic movies by Polanski, featuring the unforgettable music by Krzysztof Komeda, one of the founding fathers of European Jazz. Introduction by Prof. Stephen Neale of University of Exeter will shed light on the creator of ‘The Pianist’, the (in)famous son of Polish cinema, Roman Polanski, and his movies.

There is a programme of animation exploring the dark and sinister worlds of the fantastic, with the kind of sepulchral atmosphere with which fairy tales seem to be wreathed in Eastern Europe. Tomek Baginski’s Cathedral looks beautiful in a grotesque HR Giger fashion, and Piotr Dumala captures the spirit of Kafka and Dostoevsky in his black and white and sepia worlds. The latter’s work looks like it might be somewhat reminiscent of Alexander Alexeieff’s animated interludes in Orson Welles film of The Trial, and his Freedom of the Leg has the feel of some of Odilon Redon’s charcoal works and lithographs (which always seem ripe for animation). There’s also a thematic resonance with Jan Svankmajer’s plasticene animation Dark/Lightness/Dark, in which limbs and body parts also take on a life of their own.

Also Groundbreaking in cinema, a dark, taught film called, Mother Joan of Angels will be screened at the Exeter Library for FREE.

Check out the Kinoteka Website for more details.

Beautiful and heart tugging, they sang four songs and stayed over an hour answering questions.

An ultra-rare live appearance sees The Orb play Exeter’s Lemon Grove.

The Orb, Exeter Lemon Grove, Friday 19 March

An ultra-rare live appearance sees The Orb play Exeter’s Lemon Grove.

Witness a very special event as the psychedelic band, who usually only play live at special venues such as Battersea Power Station and big international festivals, entertain crowds in Exeter - bringing them to Exeter is a real coup.

Dr Alex Patterson and Prof Thomas Fehlmann will play classic tracks from their back catalogue along with material from their acclaimed new album, Baghdad Batteries (named after a 2,000 year old battery which was recently discovered in Iraq - it runs on lemon juice and was used in sliver-plating).

Live, The Orb have often been compared to Pink Floyd in terms of visual impact, with a range of exotic imagery specially designed to accompany their complex use of samples, electronica and beats.

Sunfish will provide live support with DJ Ambiessence on the mix.

Exeter Northcott has been placed into administration by the trustees.

Exeter Northcott has been placed into administration by the trustees.

The move comes after the trustees were presented with financial information which showed the theatre to be insolvent.

As a result the trustees have appointed Ian Walker of Begbies Traynor in Exeter as joint administrator of the theatre.

Exeter City Council and the University of Exeter have agreed to explore with the administrator ways of continuing to use the Theatre as an arts venue for the benefit of local people. They were among various organisations who contributed to the refurbishment of the Theatre in 2007 and provide annual grants towards its operating costs.

Chairman of Trustees Geoff Myers said: ‘We took this decision with a heavy heart, but when presented with the latest financial information we had no choice but to place the Theatre into administration.

“It is to be hoped a way can be found to effect a rescue of the Theatre.

“In the meantime I would encourage theatre-goers to continue to support the Exeter Northcott in the knowledge that those who book their tickets while the Company is in administration will, in the event of any performances being cancelled, be issued with a full refund.

“I have been greatly encouraged by the response of stakeholders, who have agreed to do all they can to ensure the Theatre continues in some way as a performance venue.’

Administrator Ian Walker added: “In the short term is it our intention to try and ensure that all performances in the spring programme can continue and announcements will be made in the press and on the Exeter Northcott website as soon as possible.

“In the longer term I believe it is important to ensure a Theatre can be maintained in Exeter and I intend to hold discussions with all existing and possibly new stakeholders at the earliest opportunity.”

“With regards to ticket sales, anyone that has purchased tickets prior to today is unfortunately an unsecured creditor of the company. However, if we are able to ensure that productions do take place as planned, it is hoped that all existing obligations to ticket holders will be honoured.

“If it is not possible for any productions to take place, details will be posted on the theatre’s website and existing ticket holders will be unsecured creditors of the company. In practice, it is likely that most people will be covered by credit card guarantees in any event.

“It is vitally important that members of the public do continue to support the theatre as without such support the theatre will not survive. Any tickets that are purchased from today will, in effect, be protected and, in the event that a production does not take place, such ticket holders will receive a refund.”

Philip Bostock, chief executive of Exeter City Council, continued:”The City Council will play an active role in any discussions to look at a way forward for the Northcott. We are wholly committed to the arts and the provision of high quality theatre for the city."

Drama Professor Nick Kaye, of the University of Exeter’, added: “The Theatre is a high quality venue and will continue to be made available for public performances. We will work with the other stakeholders to try and find a sustainable model to continue providing artistic events there.”

The Northcott Theatre was built on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus in 1967. It is run as an entirely separate organisation from the University with its own board of trustees.
